Facing the unprecedented challenge

Facing the unprecedented challenge posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, High School District 214 is supporting students through its remote learning plan and a range of other emotional supports.

In addition, District 214 has initiated projects to help ease the shortage of Personal Protective Equipment, commonly referred to as PPE. This site explains how our district, working with numerous community partners, is producing face shields and face masks that will be utilized to maximize the supply of higher-specification PPE needed by front-line health care professionals.

Face shields

District 214 and Harper College are producing face shields consisting of a clear plastic shield secured by a plastic headband and elastic band. Administrators and CTE (Career and Technical Education) teachers from Buffalo Grove and Wheeling high schools are using 3-D printers to produce the headbands. Harper is producing laser-cut plastic shields. This gear will be utilized by volunteers and retail workers in Northwest suburban Chicago.

Build your own face shield

The prototype 3-D face shield was developed by Prusa Research a.s.. The design of the shield is fully open-source - anyone can produce it and/or modify it. The shields are made from accessible and inexpensive materials.
